I just discovered a little gem called a pineapple tomitillo at the market

Aren't those what they used to call "ground cherries?"

I think you can make pies and preserves from them.

My Mom's use for ground cherries.

When I was young, my Mother would make "Sunshine Jam" with them. The berries were husked, smashed and mixed with sugar and apread in a baking pan -- probably 9 x 13. Then a sheet of glass was placed on top of the pan and it was set outside in the sun. Every so often, when some moisture would collect on the underside of the glass, she would carefully lift it and drain off the water, replace the lid and let it "cook" some more. This continued all day. It was my favorite jam.

Thanks for the memory.

They grow easily from the seeds inside...

Tomatillos are virtually pulp & seeds beneath the surface. A small piece will provide enough seeds to have a whole crop of your own.
