I just sliced eight peaches for a pie. They are not worthy. What else can I do with them?

In fact, they are bit on the sour side. So much for the Los Gatos farmers market. I thought my favorite grower from my market also had a stand at that market and it turns out they don’t. Why does my market have to be the only one that’s not open during Covid? I paid top dollar for these stupid peaches.

I feel her pain. The figs I got at LG had less than 24 hrs left in them.

I ended up making a cobbler with the peaches and strawberries (also from LG mkt). Boy am I glad I didn’t waste my homemade pie crust. Normally, at my market I have people with the selection of peaches there’s maybe 8 to 10 kinds at a booth. An LG there was only the option of yellow or white peaches. I’ve seen worse farmers markets, but I was hoping for all the fancy stuff given it’s an affluent area. My market just down the road in Campbell is at odds with the city regarding placement during Covid, And we all are the worse for it.

Given Covid has reduced us all to pretty much only having food as our joy, it’s sad to not have access to the good stuff. smileys/frown.gif

I found peaches to be not as exciting this year, as they have been in the past. For me, that

is pretty devastating. I make crepes in the morning and use maple syrup with the peaches. That hides a bit.

My salsa was so blah that I had to add lots of salt. That was good.

I did peach custard cake, over and over (and over) and will make another this weekend.

They just don't seem to be as bright and zesty as they usually are. Maybe they are reflecting us. Perhaps they have to be picked by people with verve, and no one has it right now.

I fortunately have found the opposite although I think ours are done now. OUrs have been

HUGE in size and just delicious. Made good jam and chutney. I'll go today to see what is available--last week's were small but very good. The variety was something like Autumn ____.

I tried to make Wild Turkey peach jam & it didn't work out, so I drained off the sugared peach syrup

to try again with the peach slices. But the syrup was so intensely peachy I used it to make cocktails:

ice
1 shot Wild Turkey
1 jigger peach syrup
top off with ginger ale

Stir. Drizzle a bit more peach syrup on top.

Like a liquid dessert that makes you forget all about 2020...at least for a moment.

The couple I buy from at the farmer's market come from just north of Shelby.

Often from them I can get peaches that have not been hydro-cooled--still with the fuzz on. That's the best.
The largest grower in this area is probably McLeod farms in McBee SC. They are good but their peaches are definitely cooled and may NEVER ripen. All the peaches I got needed at least 3 days on the counter for ripening.
We pass the McLeod orchard on the way to the beach and in the spring it is really beautiful to see the blossoms progress across the half mile of trees as the different varieties come to bloom. In March one end was topped with pink and then progressed to just bare trees, waiting for their time.
The Asheville regional farmer's market is amajor distribution point for all kinds of veggies and fruit.
Pennsylvania is actually a major producer of peaches too

This was from Marg CDN2 in a peach thread. It is really good

Peach Salsa (as I like it)

3 ripe, firm peaches, unpeeled, 1/4" dice
1/4 c. red onion, finely diced
2 T chipotle chiles in adobo, minced
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 t freshly ground black pepper

I made a cobbler and threw in strawberries. Not worth the calories…

It probably would’ve been more useful to just throw those expensive peaches directly in the compost pile.

Meanwhile, the zucchini and patty pan squash explosion has begun. Woe is me!!!

Finally got my first three ripe tomatoes this morning.

Pick those squash daily, and pick 'em small!! or. . .

pull some plants. .. smileys/wink.gif

I love pattypan squash and the bumpy crookneck summer squash. The pattypans always succumb to mildew of some sort after not producing much. As for the bumpy crooknecks, which I feel taste superior to the smooth ones I have tried, I forgot to put some in!
