I saw turmeric root at a veggie stand. Just curious if anyone has used it and if it's as different

from dried as fresh ginger is from dried. I suppose it stains everything it comes in contact with the way the dried does? Is it worth the price? I don't know how long it would last and I don't use a lot of turmeric.

Lol, how right you are!

It stains hands, knife, cutting board, apron, kitchen counters, everything! I recently cooked with it for the first time, but I didn't find the flavour as compelling as a really good turmeric powder. Maybe fresh from the farm it would be more intense.

I adore the taste of turmeric powder that's been sizzled in a little oil. It loses its bitterness, and gets a wonderful nutty/toffee flavour and aroma. It's so much more than just a colouring agent. If it's old, though, it loses all that.

FWIW, the fresh lasted about as long as ginger -- first it shriveled, and then went mouldy.

I know, but come Jul, Aug and Sept, it will be your turn. Moyn and I used to commiserate with each

other over feeling a bit out of sync with those of you who get great summer produce and were posting recipes using it. Right now, the Florida strawberries are coming in and they are very good. For the next few months, we have beautiful local produce, but when summer comes, we only get shipped in, not so pretty, stuff. The veggie stands that deal with local produce close and it's hard to find fresh produce outside a grocery store. Summing up, it's about the same situation in the summer for us as it is in the winter for you.

Ya, ya, but life just beyond the veggie stand is a bit more pleasant than here right now, too. BTW

we're loving your strawberries. Made a huge batch of crepes on the weekend. I always wait until mid-January, when the best of them arrives.
