Lol, how right you are!
It stains hands, knife, cutting board, apron, kitchen counters, everything!  I recently cooked with it for the first time, but I didn't find the flavour as compelling as a really good turmeric powder.  Maybe fresh from the farm it would be more intense.
I adore the taste of turmeric powder that's been sizzled in a little oil.  It loses its bitterness, and gets a wonderful nutty/toffee flavour and aroma.  It's so much more than just a colouring agent.  If it's old, though, it loses all that.
FWIW, the fresh lasted about as long as ginger -- first it shriveled, and then went mouldy.
