I "sucker-cumbed" to yet another appliance--a rice cooker!

Looking for advice-- I thought it would be good for grains, like farro, barley etc and be an easy way to add to our diet.

Any tips for the beginner? smileys/smile.gif

For example, how would I make Pat's coconut cilantro rice? Cook with the coconut milk, then add ingredients? Do you just cook the rice alone then add veggies, etc.?

It's a Zojurishi 3 cup micom.

Their manual and website stink!

Thanks

I love my rice cooker.

Same brand, bigger size. I usually cook the maximum amount and freeze portions in vacuum bags. I have only cooked my grains plain then added them to recipes except for once when I made pumpkin oatmeal overnight. I have heard people describe boil-overs when making oatmeal in the smaller size.

I have the Zojurishi Rice Cooker as well, a new one with the Fuzzy Logic

and I must agree that the manuel does stink. It made no sense to me and I was ready to take it back. Then I bought The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann. It made my rice cooker world so much better. It explains everything in plain English. Amazon has it for $17+ but you can buy it from a bookseller for $12+ new. Look below Amazon's price for the alternate seller.
I love it and it covers all types of grains, and even how to use the cooker for flank steak, pastas, fish, desserts, and so much more.

You cooked oatmeal in your rice cooker? I love mine, too, but usually add a little more water than

is called for. Careful, steam gets hot!

I have only tried

farro and oatmeal. The farro was excellent, the oatmeal so-so.

One time.

I tried a recipe for pumpkin oatmeal that was started right before bed and eaten in the morning. It was OK but I didn't make it a second time.

I *LOVE* my rice cooker (because I stink at making rice without it)

I have a cheapo small one from Target and it is wonderful!
