I was quite interested in watching Jamie Olivers "School Lunch Porject" last night....

I certainly don't remember that the school lunches were ever anywhere near that bad....and here on island the grandies get a very good meal consisting of mostly fresh fruit/salads etc.....

WOW! where did those parents lose their ability to think/cook healthy.

Didn't see it but you would probably gag at school lunches that are sent

by parents in the US--lunchables, premade peanut butter "pouches".

We stumbled upon it too... great show! What an eye opener! I would love to watch

the first episode, but couldn't find any rerun air dates on the TLC website.

Kudos to Jamie! More inside plus link to "Feed Me Better"...

I just *love* this series... for those who aren't familiar with it, in early 2005, Jamie Oliver began highlighting the poor state of nutrition in Britain's schools where the meal budget was 37p per child (1/4 of what is spent on prison meals). The food was entirely processed, the 'dinner ladies' would simply open a box and heat the contents, no additional ingredients (especially salt!) were allowed. Jamie tried making meals from scratch but found it difficult to stay within that very low budget and harder still to re-educate the children's palates. Through a petition drive, which Jamie delivered to PM Blair, politicians increased the school food budgets exponentially (initially adding another £280m but eventually I heard on the news to £500m!) and to revise the nutritional guidelines considerably. An impressive effort, kudos to Jamie!

Jamie's been appearing on U.S. television, talking about his school lunch project, hoping to motivate people here to do the same in their schools. I first saw him on the Today show, 4-6 months ago, where he was doing the same 're-training' with an American family that he'd done on the show. I've since heard of him appearing in various areas to meet with school officials.

My understanding is TLC does plan to repeat it, it's a 4-part series:

WW! having missed most of that...well done to Jamie...I 'specially liked the bit that the parents..

cooked over a weeks worth of "good meals" for the family, slipped up one night as a "treat" and found their kids were utterly impossible after eating that meal, even through to the next day....he has addressed a HUGE problem here.

I saw that appearance on the Today show. He was checking the family's

refrigerator, and the only fresh vegetables were carrots and lettuce for the hamster! He had fun teasing the mother about that.

I love Jamie Oliver's approach and appreciation for fresh ingredients. His recipes are so simple and straightforward that you hardly have to write them down, and they're delicious.
