I went to the Mexican market today around lunchtime and what a find!

They had fresh cheeses, homemade chorizo, Mexican oregano, ALPHABET PASTA (sheesh), and Coke that is imported from Mexico in a liter glass bottle.

As I was getting ready to check out, I noticed a hand-written menu of sorts; menudo, frijoles, CARNE ASADA TACOS AND BURRITOS, tamales, carnitas, and too many other wonderful delights. I brought home two carne asada tacos and they were wonderful. Very much like the tacos I would order in San Diego served with the spicy dry roasted chile salsa that I love. And the people inside were really nice and friendly. I can't wait to taste the chorizo. It's only 18 miles round trip to the market. They will be seeing me all the time. This makes me so happy!

See? I was afraid people were tired of me saying over & over to go to your local Mexican market.

Lots of cheap & good stuff.

The larger markets in latino neighborhoods also have great deals on staples.

The produce is awesome, and I get deals like cilantro, 4 bunches for a dollar. The regular market two blocks away sells it all over the Valley for $.69 cents EACH.

Fresh tomatillos, chiles of all kinds at reasonable prices, pork cut for tamale meat, tamale wrappers, the best nixtamal corn and, often, a tortilleria right on site.

I love it, especially at the holidays.

Boy, no kidding, great prices indeed. Lg avocados were 3 for $1 this week.

Limes were 15 for $1 and cilantro 4 medium bunches for $1. I stocked up.

I didn't know where it was and just happened to mention it to someone

I have coffee with every week and she told me about it. Her directions were kind of vague so I didn't really hold out much hope that I would find it, but there it was. It isn't very big but it is well-stocked. I might actually try and make menudo, I just won't tell anyone what is in it. Do you have a good recipe for menudo? Thanks!

I can't be in the same place when tripe is being cooked. I'm not being...

...over-dramatic. The smell of it makes me ill.

Someone else, maybe?

Michael

See if they have achiote paste. It comes in little 2" by 3" bricks and is bright red.

If you need a quickie marinade for pork or chicken, crush two or three tablespoons of achiote paste with fresh chopped garlic, a few good grinds of black pepper and mix with the juice of three or four limes, and maybe the juice of one or two oranges, if you have them laying around.

Marinate pork steaks, cutlets, boneless chicken breasts, or a whole chicken in it for about an hour, or as little as a half-hour. Grill, broil, pan fry (I use a grill pan for the cutlets), or roast. So Good!

I've ordered Rick Bayless Mexican Everyday cookbook. and I am going to

visit our son near Sacramento. I have a Mexican Market to go to near his home. Can someone tell me what Mexican products to have on hand, that I may not be able to get in my local supermarket?
Thanks!

What, if anything, is the difference in tripe and chitlins?

I smelled chitlins cooking once. I recognized the smell and it didn't smell like anything I could handle near my mouth end. (Maybe I'm cheating myself out of something great, but I'm okay with it.)

I passed an African-Caribbean market today. Thought it was a strange combination, but next time

I'll have to stop.

And I found a new pupuseria this week - been there twice

I had to do more research on Salvadorian foods though - quesadilla and empanadas are desserts here. But it is SO good. Both times they have been out of the ayote queso pupusa (squash & cheese) but I did get a loroco queso one. Took a friend and introduced him to it today and we had carne asada also. Very good. Coke is imported in glass bottles from Mexico and made with cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup. And best part - a plate sized pupusa with your choice of fillings, curtido (slaw) and sauce - $2. Taco with carne asada - $1.25

I just love hole in the wall ethnic restaurants and groceries.

I love dried and have a hard time finding it, even here. Love it cooked and then added

to a bowl of good beans. It has such a nice chewy texture-nothing like canned hominy.
