I have several of these books...here's my 2 cents...
Nominated for Best Pastry Chef is Seattle local, Leslie Mackie and she has a book out based on her bakery, "The Macrina Bakery." This is the book that makes people think I'm a better cook than I am! Every single dish I've made is great. It makes me regret I didn't get the book ages ago.
I love it because not only does it offer yeast breads, cakes and pastries, but the cafe serves lunch too. So it has soups, salads, gallettes and quiches.
I just pulled her Sweet and Spicy Nuts out of the oven. Whoa. I've got a nice little burn on my finger because I absolutely could not wait. They're amazing.
On that list of nominated books, I also have Michele Richard's, "Happy in the Kitchen". While I haven't cooked anything from it yet (it's an approachable French Laundry kind of book), I did go to a dinner based on the recipes in the book. I can vouch for that one too. I'm sure I'll be playing with this book a lot, eventually.
I have the "Soul of a New Cuisine" but I haven't cooked out of it yet. Something about it doesn't draw me in....
And I have the Dorie Greenspan "Baking from My Home to Yours." The recipes are kind of basic and for me, a little dull. But I've only tried 5-10 recipes out of the book that offers easily a couple hundred recipes. I love Dorie as a person, but I find the recipes average and lackluster. If there are some gems in it, I haven't found them yet.
Of the regional books, I'd skip Kathy Casey's Northwest book. There are much better books out there representing the Pacific Northwest.
I hear Anna Sortun's book "Spice" is fantastic and that's next on my list...
