If you have one, do you use a pasta insert in your pot?

Mine came with a set of pans I got for mom, and that now she is in assisted living I got them back. I've never used one before and I *very* rarely (I know how unAmerican of me) make pasta. However, I tried using it tonight onaccounta I have it...and it seems like a big pain and why would anyone want this kinda thing.

Am I missing something?

I only use it to steam snow crab clusters. I tried it once for pasta and it was a huge mess.

I pulled the insert out too fast when the pasta was done and water went everywhere. Use the pot to cook the pasta and the insert as a colander.

I use mine when cooking a whole box or more of pasta. I love to just lift it, carefully, and let

the water just drain back into the pot. this way there is always lots of pasta water to use in the sauce, or dip the pasta back into the hot water to re-warm if needed. let the water cool in the pot and then dump it---keeps from having the dreaded steam bath when pouring into a strainer in the sink.

I use mine for pasta and spetzle. I also use it when I make my own broth - for the bones

and veggies. Works great.

I use it when cooking in batches. That way I can drain it and leave the water boiling in the pot

Like elaine, I make lots of lasagna at one time. If I'm using fresh pasta sheets I can only do a few at a time so this comes in handy.

If it's spinach lasagna then it's also good for blanching greens in batches.

I've lived in FL since 1987 and have never had stone or snow crab claws. Do I have to give up my

Sunshine State citizenship?

Stone crab claws are addictive and cost a fortune. Better off not trying them. smileys/smile.gif

I use mine frequently and love it. I mainly use it for pasta, but also greens and stock

as others have mentioned.

I have a very low end one I received as a bridal shower gift - it is one of my most used pots in my kitchen.

All-Clad had one that was made from ss mesh. It was on sale at the Pottery Barn WS Outlet

for $10. Guess why? Imagine cleaning that huge strainer and getting all the little pasta stickies out of the mesh. Yikes. I thought about buying the pot and tossing the strainer part, but I already had a crab pot!
