I'm going to Prague tomorrow. Does anyone know what restaurants I should visit -

My favorite: Erhartova Cukrarna. A bit off the beaten path.

Classic Czech bakery/cafe, and I recommend it because it's unlike anywhere else in town.

Also: Grand Cafe Orient--a Cubist cafe. Gorgeous, painstakingly restored interior. Square (Cubist!) doughnuts.
Address: Ovocný trh 569/19, 110 00 Praha - Staré Město, Czech Republic

And Cafe Savoy, across the river, is well worth a visit. (Across from the National Theatre.)

Bakeshop Praha is the most overrated place in town.

Restaurants--all my info is probably out of date. However, the restaurant on top of Petrin (halfway up the funicular), Nebozizek, has a magnificent view and we've always heard good things about it. (Too costly for anyone on a Czech salary, so that's why we never went.) smileys/wink.gif There's a good pub right across from Strahov Monastery--also a great view (same view from Nebozizek, but from a little farther north.) The summer vineyards might also be open near the castle, by now (unless, God forbid, major mudslide or whatnot after the floods). ETA: Nebozizek's "Daily Menu" is just for lunch, and is typically only offered in Czech-language menus--that's why the prices seem mind-bendingly low. smileys/wink.gif Sneaky! But even the full menu is not bad--maybe something glorious/horrible (depending on your point of view) has happened to the exchange rate in the last 5 years...

Frantiskanska Gardens for strolling and ice cream (inside, under the Tesla stained-glass window). Cafe Rehor Samsa, across the street, in the Lucerna shopping center (I use the term loosely) is a great place for a quick beer or coffee..

Just realizing that it's 4 in the morning in Central Europe, at least, so no idea if you'll get this in time! But enjoy! smileys/smile.gif

Erin, I knew I could count on you smileys/smile.gif. I'm staying here until Friday,

so I'll have time to visit all the places you mentioned and more. From what I have seen so far, the pastries here look totally awesome. I will need to walk a ton to get away with all the goodies that are to be found here. I'm going to the Grand Cafe Orient for lunch tomorrow, and I'll take it from there.

Thank you so much for taking your time to share those places with me - I really appreciate it smileys/smile.gif

Yay! Cafe Louvre (address: Narodni 22) is good for lunch, too.

(I've only done the coffee-and-doughnuts route at Grand Cafe Orient, so I can't vouch for their cooking, really.)

I did a lot of pub eating on my teeny-tiny teacher/editor salary. smileys/wink.gif))

Another of my favorite spots is Tynska Literarni Kavarna--usually packed with students and a handful of tourists who've stumbled in and can't find their way out. The courtyard is great on a summer evening. It's behind the Tyn Cathedral, off Old Town Square: http://goo.gl/maps/7vMFb (Check the street view--it's hard to find!) Richard and Tim managed to find it! smileys/smile.gif I think the cafe is cash-only. Good marinated cheese (nakladadni hermelin)!

Monarch is another favorite--http://www.monarch.cz/web/index.php?page=21&lang=2 Good place to sample Czech wine--surprisingly good stuff. Nice outdoor tables.

Have fun!
