I'm looking at a Zouirushi Rice Cooker, 5 1/2 cup, 610 watts, fuzzy logic,

keep warm feature, and programable timer, which also bakes cakes. So, may I have your opinion on rice cookers, do they really cook rice better than cooking in a pot of water?

I wouldn't give up my rice cooker for anything!! Rice, water, push button and eureka!

Can't beat the set-and-walk-away feature. Rice is always perfectly done and it keeps it warm until needed.

BUT - mine is the standard Panasonic $30 model -- I wouldn't pay much more than that.

i have the Z brand also with fuzzy logic, etc, it is a 10 cup. i love it and use it all of the time

rice is always point on and we use the keep warm feature so that the girls have warm rice to mix with milk, honey and cinnamon for breakfast. if you eat rice on a regular basis, i would highly recommend the extra pennies spent on Z.

Ming Tsai swears by his rice cooker. I've considereed buying one myself and did a lot

of research.

One thing that stood out in tons of reviews of rice cookers on Amazon was a warning or wariness about those that had an aluminum lid for food safety concerns.

They also mentioned that a removable lid is preferred for washing. I also found out that Zojirushi rice cookers are made in China or Japan and those made in Japan were of superior quality.

I love my rice cooker - I use it all the time. I have a cheapie, a Black & Decker - cost me $20.00

hmmmm, not surprising. Isn't it funny how "back in the day" the words

"made in Japan" didn't mean quality, rather the opposite!

I've always had a rice cooker, as we eat rice every day.

We could eat rice for every meal, if we aren't watching our carbs smileys/smile.gif

Here's my thoughts.

The cheap $20.00 ones are fine if you are going to cook rice occasionally.

The cooker warmer ones (Tiger brand is the most common, about $100 to $150) are good if you are eating rice for more than one meal a day, or need to cook it it advance. I have one of those, and will keep rice in there for up to 24 hours.

The fuzzy logic ones, like the Zojirushi ones, are best if you cook different kinds of rice, especially brown rice, since there are different settings for the different types of rice.

I really don't like brown rice much, as it's drier and harder than white rice, but the sensible side of me keeps saying I need to do the whole grain thing. Hub likes brown rice, so I really should cook it more often. A friend swears by her zo, saying that brown rice comes out so much better in the fuzzy logic cooker.

when my Tiger breaks down, I'll probably get a fuzzy logic.

Hey Sandi, give jasmine brown rice a try.

I really like it. I have even used it in place of sushi rice and no one even noticed. It is softer than the usual brown rice. I think you would like it, if you can find it. There is a company called Frontier that specializes in bulk herbs and grains. They might have it.

Dawn, how much water do you use when you cook it? 1 to 1?

A friend suggested the same, and I've tried it. It was slightly better than the regular brown, but was still too loose for my taste. There was no way I could make sushi with it. Perhaps I didn't use enough water....

I still have more, so I'll try again.

I use the measurement level on my machine, I think it is 1:1 1/2 rice:water.

It is gummy enough to use it for sushi. I think it is the short grain jasmine brown rice. If I have some, I could send you some to try. Let me know if you want some.
