I'm moving; what about my spices?? >>>

Virtually all our worldly possessions will be trucked off for a Mediterranean crossing, next week, for a six-week-long journey (more or less).

So...do I include spice jars in this shipment? I have about 30 or 40 jars of ones I don't really want to have to buy again (in six weeks)--lemongrass, rubs, specialty blends, etc. Should I just pack them well and hope they survive? Or do I need to toss everything and wait for another paycheck to replace them all?

Or maybe there's some happy medium...that doesn't involve me lugging a carry-on bag of spices. smileys/wink.gif

What say ye?

Not sure I understand but can't you just pack them up , wrapping each jar separately and

ship them along with the rest of the kitchen belongs? They should survive a six week period okay, I'd think. You can always check them after you're settled again and replace only what you feel needs to be. Best wishes on your move, I hope it's to someplace you will really enjoy.

Spices and moving thoughts

Like Curious says, the spices will be fine for six weeks as far as the shelf life is concerned- unless they will endure extreme heat for any length of time. If the latter is the case, I suggest either packing in a box and shipping via a reliable carrier to your next address (or an acquaintance nearby) ahead of time or just saving a few to carry with you (dump the glass bottles if you have them and just pack in Zip Lock-type bags) and restocking later.

My herbs and spices endured almost 4 weeks in a 20' container over high seas and sitting on docks in a few places not to mention a good long trip on a train and I had to get rid of about half of them. The heat got them.

Where are you moving to, Erin? Inquiring minds can't wait to find out!

Oh..forgot about heat...good one, Cathy. I was more concerned with unwanted

visitors. I was going to suggest vacuum-sealing them to avoid that issue.

Thanks for the ideas ......

I'm worried about heat, too... Maybe I'll just send them by post.
Next stop, Prague, Czech Republic! smileys/smile.gif (Husband's hometown.)
Two years here went very quickly; I can't wait to come back and visit...and see all the stuff we didn't get to see, in time!
Thanks for your advice, all---

Lucky you!! I love Prague.

I once spent a summer backpacking around Europe and Prague was my very favorite city. Such beautiful architecture and warm people.

I enjoyed U Schnellu restaurant very much, but that was 15 years ago. I don't know if it's still any good, but it's still around...
