I'm sitting here LOL: Haagen-Daz's new "Mayan" Chocolate Ice Cream

Don't you just love marketing and pretty words?

Wondering what was so Mayan about it, other than the fact that the Mayans used chocolate and cinnamon (but then, so do the Poles, so why not Polish Chocolate???). So I delved into their Web site where they admit that they use Aristocrat Cocoa, which is an alkalai dutch-process cocoa that the Mayan, I would hazard a guess, never knew about. And then they state that it was Europeans, not Mayans, who first combined cinnamon and cocoa together. (Which I don't think is correct, but go figure.)

So maybe the correct name should be Dutch Chocolate Cinnamon? But then that cool Web site would be for naught.

And so it goes.

Amazing how the right key words/media hype and BIG money pay off - I see the ad for this everywhere.

Mayan? Ha! You're so right - it's completely fabricated. And it's not even that good - I tried it once and was not impressed. It's not chocolatey enough for one thing, but then I'm not a Haagen-Dazs fan to begin with - their flavors are not bold enough for me. This new flavor simply tastes like their usual chocolate ice cream with some cinnamon added. Big deal.

Also, I'm spoiled from making my own ice cream, which is much more deep, dark and chocolatey, especially Alice Medrich's bittersweet chocolate ice cream! I've also found an excellent organic chocolate ice cream called Julie's which is not as sweet as most commercial ice creams and is more chocolatey.
