I'm wondering about food temp differences between Canada and USA

I know we Americans are an international joke for wanting cold beverages to be served with ice. Are there other significant differences? We just came home from our time in stunningly gorgeous Alberta and British Columbia, with added days in Vancouver. Hot drinks were scalding but that makes sense for brewing tea.

Stews and meal plates tended to be lukewarm which felt food-unsafe to me. I ate it except for one time in a nice restaurant in Vancouver: the plate was hot but the inside of the food was still cool so we asked for it to be heated. Came back only about three degrees warmer.

Is this typical and I just didn't know what is acceptable?

But temp aside, I'd go back in a heartbeat! Beautiful geography and kind, friendly people everywhere!

No, just sloppy restaurants. I find that people here, in BC, are

a little too casual about many things. That's just my taste but seems to be okay with locals. The ones who have moved from the east complain about there not being exceptional restaurants, wait service needing some overhaul, and so on. It may be part of the being 'real' attitude that seems to go along with living in magnificent surroundings. It's certainly not what I am used to and Alberta and BC represent only a tiny fraction of this enormous country. Perhaps people are complacent as restaurant customers here. They may be too 'nice' to complain. Seriously. Me, I'm not so nice. I expect more.

I have a friend who has lived here all his life, other than other parts of the world, and assumes that this is what the rest of Canada is like. He keeps stating: "in Canada", rather than "in BC". With lots of guidance he is now starting to tame his assumptions. It isn't the same elsewhere. But I love it here. It was a good decision to move here.

Certainly restaurants don't represent what people like in their homes. (In fact, for that friend, I bought a plate warmer for his birthday as we both insist on hot plates and hot food. A perfect gift if anyone is looking for one for a cook, by the way)

I'm glad you enjoyed the scenery though. I was thinking of you last week.

Glad you enjoyed your visit Anna. I live in Alberta (as does RuthAB, who used to post here)

I like my food very hot and I honestly can't say that I have had your experience very often.
So I'm sorry to hear that you experienced otherwise.
Sweet of you to still give such positive feedback.

I'll chalk it up to being in high-tourist areas.

emtd, Are you anywhere near Banff or Jasper? Lake Louise or Moraine Lake? Such incredible beauty there. We felt like we were inside travel posters. We even had snow in June, which was exhilarating for us San Diegans!
Our older son just moved to Colorado so I can't wait to see if his Rockies are as good as yours.
Judy, if you see this, we did go to Stanley Park, Gastown, Yaletown, and Granville Island. Liked the park and riding the False Creek ferries a lot.

Lol, plate-warmers are a great idea! You live in such a spectacular place, why worry about food?

I live on the island where we have the added benefit of the ocean. I have friends who come here from

the east and who, on drives up into the mountains stop at a lookout and say almost reverently, "Why am I still living there?". Our mountains are not as awe-inspiring as the Rockies but it's all here at my door. How privileged I am. I live right across the street from the ocean and it's cold, however. I can't get used to the lack of HOT summers and nights of 85 degrees. But the palm trees all around are testament to the glorious winters. Glad you enjoyed it all.

Vancouver Island is heaven. I'm with your friends!

You have everything I like, ocean waves, streams, mountains, big trees... ahhhhh….

We did all of that! Great trip, huh. Our trip over the Capilano bridge and ski lift was an utter

bust though. Totally fogged in. Ah well, another reason to go back.

I also thought Canadians were the nicest people I've ever met. Eh.

PS: I thought the Canadian Rockies far surpassed ours.
