REC: Sweet and Sour Meatballs

from Sally Catlin (a friend of my mom's in the 60's)

5 slices bread, cut into 1/2" cubes, or whirl in a blender instead of cutting

1 egg

1/2 c. milk

2 # hamburger (beef/pork combo okay)

salt, pepper, garlic salt

1/2 c. salad oil

Sauce: (double)

3/4 c. water

1/4 c. vinegar

1 8oz can tomato sauce

1/4 c. granulated sugar

1/2 c. sweet gherkin chunks

1 13 1/2 oz can pineapple chunks - drained

2 small green peppers, cut into bite sized chunks

2 carrots, sliced diagonally - thinly

1 onion, cut into chunks

1 1# jar whole spiced crab apples (optional - since they are hard to find, skip them without apology)

In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, milk and egg; let stand 5 minutes. Beat together and add meat and seasonings. Make 35 golf ball sized balls.

Brown in salad oil. Pour off oil and saute slightly carrots, pepper and onions, add remaining ingredients (except apples) and meatballs.

Simmer uncovered 1/2 hour or till ingredients are cooked through. Since we live in an area where Asian cooking is well known, aim for crisp-tender vegetables. make the peppers in big enough pieces so they stand up without disappearing. You can serve with steamed rice as a side dish. Makes it go further.

Spoon into a large serving bowl, garnish with crab apples.

4-6 servings

(this is just how my mom wrote it - very good - this was her favorite dish to take to a pot luck).

Gung Hay Fat Choy!
