Interesting opinion piece about mayo falling from favor

Very well-written article and insightful, but it didn't convine me to give up Mr. Hellmann. As a

boomer, I was raised on his sauce and love it. Naturally, I've had to cut way back to appease the anti-cholesterol gods, but I still sneak it in....just not on a daily basis anymore nor slathered on quite so thickly.

In truth, I could have done without the Kendra Pierre-Louis' quote in this article--yuk(!)--but even that won't make me shun mayo. Guess it is just ages and stages, no? I will guess the pendulum will swing back to a higher consumption of mayonnaise one or two decades on down the road.

Great article, HEather_in_SF, and thank for posting! Wigs

I use very little mayo these days, I love it but prefer to use my calorie intake on a little

real butter here and there. I usually substitute non-fat sour cream, or a good Greek yogurt, depending on the food I am preparing. I don't miss it at all and frankly cannot tell much difference. I used Dukes for awhile, because it does not have any sugar, but having to order online became another chore, as it is not available anywhere here in our area. I made a dill sauce for a salmon salad last week and used sour cream with 1 Tablespoon of mayo added rather than the 1/4 cup it called for. I added lots of fresh dill and lemon juice and it was excellent.

Tried but couldn't get used to non-fat sour cream or mayo

so we do what you do, use less of the real stuff. I now make stroganoff with no sour cream and we add a tiny spoon to the top at serving. Non-fat Greek and standard yogurt are now main ingredients in modified favorite recipes, and we were not yogurt fans before gallbladder-gate. The change in taste is enough different that old recipes have become new whereas the non-fat mayo/sour cream versions just didn't taste right. We have evolved, lost weight, eating better smileys/wink.gif Colleen

"just not on a daily basis anymore nor slathered on quite so thickly"

All our young lives, Dh and I were Miracle Whip devotees. But we grew to love mayo (and shun MW smileys/smile.gif. Now, we feel justified in using the reduced amount, less frequently, and loving Mr. Hellmann! Colleen

We love that non fat sour cream in the black and white cow print container

Carton says Enjoyably Yours Non-Fat Sour Cream. I think it is the best out there, where we live anyway. I dislike sour cream with sugar in it. This one tastes like the real thing.

Karen - thank you. We will try non-fat sour cream again

We tried several different store brands in low- and non-fat versions but didn't think to try "premium" brands. I'll see what I can find. I know we were surprised at the differences between low fat cream cheese brands - don't like Philadelphia - finding one that we do like. Colleen
