Interesting story about how California got started with dates....

I heard that NPR story, too. Fascinating.

I loved the part where the American date growers sent back plantings to the Middle Eastern areas that had lost their crops because of disease (and war, probably). A nice tribute.

Very interesting article. I was in high school in the late fifties and I remember the facination

with all things Arab. In fact my girlfriend and I were in a big play at the end of the year and we did a sort of (our version) Arab dance with costumes we made with veils, etc.
I also enjoyed reading the excellent comments at the end of the article.

I remember the date shakes in Southern California! Also, when we went to Furnace Creek in Death

Valley they have date orchards there, sometimes we would camp under the trees (until we got ousted) and it was wonderful shade and there was a little store that sold fresh dates. So good.
