Is Bittman reading FK? "TV Cooking vs. Real Cooking" :)

That's one reason I love watching Jacques Pepin. His knife skills are wonderful...

...and he obviously spent a great deal of time working in professional kitchens. Not only directing them, but working in them.

There's a fine line between showing a chef mince a clove of garlic for the 50th time, and holding the attention of an experienced cook who watches for the creativity and to get ideas for their own creations.

Oh well... the debate goes on.

I'm sorry to say this, but Claudia did...

...NOTHING for me! She was a distraction from the real talent, and I found the whole thing to be contrived and awkward.

I "get" the idea they were trying to convey, but I found her to be, basically, 'in the way'!

Give me Jacques, and more Jacques.

Ok. Here's where I get mean about Claudia...

...and it's all your fault, S2LA, for egging me on.

Not only was she basically useless in the kitchen, she didn't know where to stand, she made condescending remarks when her Dad forgot something (even though 95% of the time I bet he "forgot" because of some inane remark she made to distract him), and the worst was watching her taste a finished dish. She had a mouth the size of Monstro the Whale and wasn't shy about opening it. It reminded me of Mr. Ed eating peanut butter! Wifey and I nicknamed her Sea Biscuit. Oy! I stopped watching the show.

That was mean.

That was mean!! smileys/smile.gif I also found she distracted from a great chef. She reminded me of

when you watch the morning "news" shows, and the host would ask the chef, while preparing a dish on national TV, silly questions...i.e. "Do you use a spoon or a spatula to best lift out your fish from the dish?" or "what else is basil used in?" or one of my favorites was a comment, that the stove looked really hot!

Recently, I have noticed that they have been having hosts that really enjoy cooking or are at least familiar with it, responsible for that segment.
