Is the new Joy of Cooking worth it? (I didn't much care for the last edition.)

This review sounds like the new edition may be the best of both. . .

I thought the last edition was a little too "Hoity-toity", if you know what I mean.

I really like my old edition that I bought back in the early to mid 80s. It covered all sorts of stuff and the commentary was down to earth, interesting and amusing.

The newer edition (was it by a Rombauer son?) just was too updated and not half as fun or imformative, at least to me. I gotta be amused/interested to be impressed with a cook book and the newer edition just didn't float my boat.

The newer editon just seemed to lack the soul or heart of the older edition.

And when I read the rather long blurb about it from Jessica's Biscuit, it makes me want to buy it right now!

The last edition was too limited (no preserving section) and other odd (more)

decisions on what to retain/drop....
The "new" edition looks MUCH better, tho.
I always remember looking at a mid-century editon of Joy for a mushroom sauce....
The recipe said
"take one can cream of mushroom soup"
And I silently SCREAMED..."if I had a can of soup , I wouldn;t be looking for a recipe".
Joy has had many reincarnations...it is really a window into culinary history and trends.

I've only had it a couple of weeks but have thoroughly enjoyed (and referred)

to it-I feel its a kind of cookbook for the ages, that every chef should have!
