Is this a caper?! I found it one of my Indian take-out meals - smelled like

yup, the ladies are right - it's a green cardamom pod -- the seeds are the edible part.

and are VERY yummy in all kinds of dishes. If you like the flavor, look at the cardamom thread in 'Great Threads'

 
You know, for some reason I thought that might've been what it was... "pod" just kept popping

into my mind after I posted my question. But it tasted so differently that they ground cardmom I've used before. Very perfumey! I've used it in baking before, and always thought it was a little like cinnamon. Thanks girls!
