ISO: ISO a TNT crusty white bread

I'm looking for a recipe for white bread that is not too soft, something with a firmer texture that would make good toast. I want to mix it in my bread machine, but bake it in the oven.

 
Just about any good white bread rec will get crusty....

if you brush the crust with water and cornstarch, and put a pan of water on the shelf below the bread pans. Work flour into your dough until it's really not going to take any more. You'll have to knead in the last 1/2 cup or so by hand as the bread machine probably won't stand up to that much resistance. You'll want it to feel...like a baby's powdered behind...soft and smooth without being sticky at all. Sorry...that's the analogy Gramma gave me!

 
Also, it there is oil in your recipe, the bread will have a softer crust and Your analogie . . .

to a baby's butt is a good description!

 
Here are 3 "white bread" recipes I made a few years ago when I was using my bread machine alot.

Of the three, the buttermilk bread and sour cream bread were my favorites.

I'll also post another favorite below (not white bread though) which makes yummy toast and terrific sandwiches...a buttermilk honey wheat bread.

Dede's Buttermilk Bread (bread machine)

1-1/2# dough or (1# dough)

1-1/8 cups buttermilk (7/8 c.)
3 tbsp honey honey (2)
1-1/2 tsp salt (1 tsp)
1 tbsp butter (1 tbsp)
3 cups bread flour (2)
1/4 tsp baking soda (1/4 )
1-1/2 tsp red star yeast (1-1/2 tsp.)

Place all ingredients in bread pan, select Light Crust setting, and press start.

Notes from book: Moist, rich, tender loaf. Plain, white sandwich bread doesn’t get much better than this.

Sour Cream Bread

1 lb. size
1/3 cup plus 1 tbsp water
1/3 cup sour cream
2 cups bread flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp yeast

1-1/2 lb. size
1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp water
3/4 cup sour cream
3-3/4 cups bread flour
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp brown sugar, firmly packed
1-1/4 tsp yeast

2 lb. size
1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp water
1 cup sour cream
4-1/2 cups bread flour
1-1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp brown sugar, firmly packed
1-1/2 tsp yeast

Basic White Bread

1 pkg yeast (2-1/4 tsp)
3 cups bread flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp nonfat dry milk powder
1 tbsp butter, room temperature
1-1/4 cups warm water

Pour yeast to one side of the inner pan. Add rest of ingredients in order given.

Buttermilk Honey Wheat Bread

1 lb size

1 cup buttermilk
1 tbsp butter
2 tbsp honey
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1-1/3 cups bread flour
2/3 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp yeast

1-1/2 lb. size

1-1/4 cup buttermilk
1-1/3 tbsp butter
2-1/2 tbsp honey
1 tsp salt
1/3 tsp baking soda
1-3/4 cups bread flour
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1-1/2 tsp yeast

2 lb. size

1-1/2 cup buttermilk
1-1/2 tbsp butter
3 tbsp honey
1-1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 cups bread flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 tsp yeast

Place ingredients in the order your bread machine calls for.

Note: This bread is great toasted too with peanut butter on it -- yum (and jelly on top of that is double yum). I think it also makes an outstanding sandwich with black forest ham, swiss cheese, avocado slices, tomato, thin sliced red onion, mayonnaise and honey mustard.
