ISO: ISO: About the little bird that some pie makers use when baking there pies

A coworker was given a little birdie that goes on a pie when baking that (I think) is used to determine when the pie is done. I've never used one and know nothing about it/how to use it.

I told her I would turn to you guys for insight. (Like whether you bury the bird up to it's neck in the actual pie or set the whole thing on top of the pie
