A store on island has been taken over by a group called North West Company...they have apparently stores under the names of NorthMart, AC Value center etc...is it a good chain? They say they will tailor thier approach to each store's local market needs...urk!!!! not all of us that live here go for cheaper and tackier the better. However it is happening so I just wanted a little info...many TIAs

Joanie, we have AC centers up here in "bush" Alaska. They offer better groceries than we ever had

before in the villages. It's a tough business to fly everything in to those remote areas, but that Canadian company has found their niche in this market. It is part of the Hudson's Bay family, at least it used to be. We even get Peek Freans and other Canadian products. Our company is a regular customer since we have employees who live in remote areas of Alaska where the radar sites are. We order from them every month and are pleased with them, but then, anything was an improvement out in the "bush". Up here they stock non-grocery items as well---clothing, garden stuff, tools, etc.

Great...thanks for the answer...

I saw when I re-read the article that it was in Canada and Alaska and now will have branches in Hawaii too. The store chain it has bought out I thought was a bit like the Costco everyone talks about.
It has furniture and garden tools, kids cheap toys, lots of underwear, bathroom-thingies although very little and bad quality really (OH, for a Bed, Bath and Beyond!!!) and kitchen appliances (small) and other kitchen goods that one can sometimes find things that are quite good value.

The food side has some of the best cheap meat, big frozen section and rather nice veg and salad on occassion...

I am glad to hear that it will prolly improve further as the article indicated....

The only hassel about shopping here is it is a place where one needs to buy in quantity or case lots. It is a large warehouse sort of building!
Hope this will change a bit.
