it does't have to be Indian food - in fact it might be nice to have something at bit more "american" because I don't know the tastes of the guest list. This is a last minute business dinner (Tues night/35+) I'm planning for work so I won't be making them. The thing here is that this is being done at the home of one of our higher ups and his wife is ordering the main food but wanted my help with ideas for appetizers - nothing heavy as some guests will be coming from a wine/cheese type reception so I don't want to repeat that - and she mentioned she might order some kabobs but we need cold items to scatter around to get folks to wander about and mingle. I'm not feeling inspired at the moment, but I knew somebody here could help come up with something!

Vegetable Samosas from Williams-Sonoma ..

Deleted: Disregard - these are served hot. Didn't realize you wanted a cold appetizer.

Hi Maria - I just noticed Trader Joe's carries papadams in 2 flavors -

You could set bowls of them around with some dipping sauces.

Some easy ideas...

You can get naan and papadum in full size at most Indian markets (and even mini size at some), top them with cream cheese or mild goat cheese, then chutney. Or serve naan or papadum with an assortment of dips: spicy lentil (just puree lentils with garam masala and a bit of water or stock), eggplant, smoked eggplant, hummus, etc. To round it out, you could have veggies to dip, for those who don't eat breadstuffs.

Beyond that, most Indian appetizers (and I see you mention it needn't be Indian theme), tend to be served hot. If you want to branch out, how about simple bruschetta or pita with dips?

How about a cucumber/yogurt or sour cream salad? Not sure, but...

I think it's called raita and it'd go well with Indian food.

Or Dawn/MO's lentil salad? That's kind of spicy and different.

Or coconut chutney served with crackers (or something slightly more "authentic")?

Prawns with green mango, cumin, ginger and onion. Grated carrot with coriander & yogurt, cucumbers

& red onion, thinly sliced, with cumin, chili, tomato slices and lemon juice. Tandoori chicken bits, served cool. Room temp shrimp pakora dipped in yogurt.

Love this food.
