Although I've made this ump-teen times, I never looked at the back of the lentil bag to read the directions.

I was shocked that it said to simmer the lentils for 2 hours!! I never cooked them that long when making the salad. I'd think they's be mushy after that long. I think I cook them for 25 minutes, tops. And I never presoak them. I thought that was one of the advantages of using lentils - not having to soak them beforehand.

BTW, it's a good idea to really pick through them before you cook them - this time I found a stray kernel of corn in there with them. Bag said it might contain stones or metal! Ewwww....

 
I never presoak them, and I never cook them that long even when i am making soup.

I always place lentils and other legumes in a colander and rinse them and hunt out any "foreign objects". One of my girlfriends broke a tooth on a small pebble that was hidden in a bean burrito. Ever since that happened, I look really closely and do not hurry that part of the cooking process.
