I am co-hosting a baby shower and we are planning a Hawaiian theme as the baby was conceived in Hawaii. The time will be 11AM, however no brunch foods are allowed (per the mom-to-be!) Any recipes that would fit the theme would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance

REC: Luau Pork

I'd do the low cooking for closer to 8 hours to be more tender. I haven't tried the slow cooker version.

Enjoy!

Debbie

Luau Pork

1 pork butt
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
brown sugar

In a conventional oven:
Take a port butt with all its wonderful fat and bone still in, place in a covered pot. Take a small bottle of Worcestershire sauce (1/3 cup) and put half on each side. Take a small handful of brown sugar and smush it onto the meat, flip over and repeat on the other side.

Place covered pot in preheat oven at 500F and leave there for 30 minutes. Turn down oven to 250 degrees and leave alone for 4 to 6 hours. Do not open the oven as this reduces the heat in the oven and messes up the cooking.

In a crockpot:
Follow above preparations. Preheat crockpot to hot and place meat inside, turning down to low. Leave alone for 4-6 hours. Do not lift lid during cooking.

Description:
"Not too pretty, but fall-off-the-bone tender, tasty and EZ!"

Some ideas:

Sweet and sour meatballs with pineapple and green pepper, vegetable sushi(mama probably can't have the raw fish), fresh spring rolls, a pretty rice salad, coconut shrimp, get creative with Spam--open face sandwiches cut with baby themed cookie cutters, Spam kabobs, macadamia crusted fish, tropical teas, Hawaiian trifle, macadamia coconut refrigerator cookies(recipe over on Epi). I have the trifle recipe somewhere if you want it. Oh, and welcome new member!

glhintz, the Chicken Long Rice is a good choice from the group project

"long rice" is more commonly known as "cellophane noodles"- Chicken Long Rice is very often served at baby luaus here in Hawaii. I know you are having a baby shower but the biggest celebration in Hawaii is a baby luau, the celebration of a child's first birthday. Huge party, lots of great food.

Most people think that Hawaiian food has pineapple in it but in reality it is very rarely used in dishes. Dole Pineapple started the myth in the 1950s to sell more pineapple.
