ISO: ISO Joe - did you survive the festiaval yesterday? :-D

In Search Of:
Yes, I did, but just barely! We didn't make much money, but we made the front page of the paper!

The Press Telegram put pictures on the front page, and there is a gallery online which I can't open, but perhaps you can:

The main link is to a local blogger who posted nice photos.

For a first time event, it came off really well. I'm sunburnt to a crisp and my feet are blisterd, but I'm quite content.

Thanks for asking!

Congratulations! Wow, I'll bet the front page was unexpected, but well-deserved!

It looks beautiful!

I was able to see the Press-Telegram photos, very nice.

You'll most likely be mobbed next year - we'll definitely be there!

OK Joe, I'll give ya a few days to recoup but I must know more! LOL And

we have got to hook you up with a way to get some pictures. Thanks for the link and congrats on the paper covering it but I'd love to see more of this beautiful garden. Have you thought about starting a blog? Maybe the whole garden community? What you and your neighbors are doing is on the leading edge so why not get out in front with it? I know how much work you put in to it so good for you!!!

Here is a blog that one of the gardeners started, with some pictures.

I may need a few weeks, not days.

Orchid, the demand for garden space is huge right now. We have a waiting list of over 60 people for this garden. I'm also on the board of Long Beach Organic, the non-profit that oversees this and several smaller gardens. We want to open other gardens throughout the city, and we have a few projects in the works.

A couple years ago this garden was half abandoned and overgrown with weeds. The city was going to take it away. A few of us got together and took over the management from our overworked manager, started enforcing a few rules and having regular work days. It made such a difference to have a team. Then some of the same people got onto the board of the corporation, which was also suffering from neglect--books undone, returns not filed, and some very cranky old board members. (Ask Randi to fill you in on all the drama, LOL. She's my sounding board.) We're still working on that mess so we can get organized for new gardens.

It's like the little red hen. It's so hard to get assistance in the early stages. It takes work to turn a vacant lot into an oasis, and it's hard to sign up gardeners when the space doesn't look like much yet. Some of them never get off the ground. Of course, once a garden is full and it looks inviting, everyone wants in.

Anyway, it's rewarding in the end, though it's awfully smelly for being on the "leading edge," LOL.

Totally unexpected. Today I sat down with a friend who also worked on it and we made a 2-page list

of ideas on how we could do things differently to increase attendance, most of which wouldn't cost a thing. We just had to get through the first one.

LOL, I have no idea. The sad thing is that the prize for guessing the correct weight was....

the giant zucchini! And it was popular. Who would want one of those? They're culinarily useless.
