Ok, so a million years ago, I used to post on Gail's, went back after a long absence and found things were not quite the same.. glad I stumbled on this site!

So the reason for my search? I had a dish at Cafe Silan in San Jose last weekend called Lopekan.. is looks like it might be a falafel type thing, but had a different texture from the falafel I have had (not that my experience is that great, mind you) and was a bit more coarse.

The description is this: Garbanzo beans, cumin, bulgar stuffed with carmelized onion and walnut.

They were formed into balls and fried, the covered in yogurt sauce.

is this falafel with a different name that is more Kurdish? Another thing?

any advice would be appreciated.

Sheridan! (why am I hearing Patricia Routledge as I type that???)

I remember you from Gail's (RIP). Glad you followed the bread crumbs to our new home. Welcome.

Sorry, I'm no help on Kurdish cuisine.

Wow... good memory!

I have not posted in a very long time, though I lurked a great deal. It is so nice to see some of the "old faces" I was never a very active poster, so it is nice to be remembered!

Isn't it your layered potato recipe (onions, potatoes, etc) that I use frequently?

hope all is well and I look forward to lurking more. smileys/smile.gif

I remember you, SheridanLA- welcome. I did some research and

could not find exactly what you are looking for but after seeing that you know what the main ingredients are of Lopekan, I would think you could do some experimenting on your own. It sounds delicious and probably is that restaurant's version of Falafel but stuffed with the carmelized onions. I was able to view the restaurant's menu on line- I would have trouble picking something for dinner- I would want to sample it all!

definitely good food

Cafe Silan was definitely good... and I had a difficult time deciding what to order. I will go back and try something else when I visit my cousins again.

I will see about experimenting a bit with falafel, etc to try to recreate the dish.

nice to see you all again.. I don't cook much anymore (pity) and have moved to another state now, to another job that has me working lots of hours.. but every once in a while I play in the kitchen.
