Please see my response to your post at #3980 regarding 8 O'Clock coffee.

Sometimes things are very slow here, then other days I can't keep up!! But I wanted to share this memory.

...and what a lovely one. Thank you, m. Check out this bank at ebay...

Maybe you can get one for each of your siblings?

My father died suddenly in 1991. A few Christmases ago, each of my seven brothers and sisters (and spouses) wrote their favorite memory of Dad. My sister slipped family photos out of Mom's house and I made digital scans.

I put it all together in a big 8x10 format book with a black and white photo for each story. On Christmas Eve, we presented "The Fisherman’s Laughter: Memories Caught on a Line" to Mom "from her kids and bonus kids" and then each of us read our story. Here's one from my eldest brother, oldest child and my father's namesake:

Frank’s Memories of Dad: Story #2

I can't remember how old I was, but one day Dad told me we had to have a talk. As we walked down to the cellar family room, I did as quick an inventory as I could to figure out what I had just gotten busted for.

After a couple of moments of silence, Dad said that Mom said we should have “THE TALK.” He asked me if I had any questions. I said “No.” After a couple more moments of silence, he said “Keep it your pants.” I said “Okay, Dad.”

End of “THE TALK.”

PS: In our house, the bank would have been the actual Eight O'Clock can! Except Dad had them all in his workshop filled with nails.

What a neat story, you know, funny I grew up in the Southwest and do not remember Eight O' Clock....

coffee. Folgers, Maxwell House, and Hills Bros.
Remeber being really short and loving that smell when a new can of Folgers was opened. Weird, now when I go to a job,is that stuff in the plastic can with foil top--no smell at all?
Remember Yuban, was the good stuff? We have two roasters here in Ketchikan. and when I was up in Ang's country, there are 16 espresso huts on the penisula, not counting in super markets etc.

OMG . . . you KNEW EXACTLY what I was talking about!!!

And THANKS for the link!! Such a shot of MEMORY!! I may just have to bid.

While my siblings are FAR more financially successful than I, I am the SAVER of the family, having inherited my Dad's habit of saving coins, dollars, everything, everywhere.

I remember on the day of starting Junior High School, my Dad left me a note that my allowance would be increasing from 50 cents a week to $1.50 a week, but that I would now be responsible for paying for my own lunches, etc. In addition, I would still be responsible for "saving" at least half of my allowance. I don't know what "clicked" with me, but something did.

Who would have known that an impulsive decision in 1966 (or 1967) would have turned into a life long habit of saving coins??? I've saved ALL my coins in almost 40 years!! I've paid for cross country moves, numerous trips to Greece, and my latest stash (almost $1,000) will be used to finance a move to a new condo.

WOW!! I can't believe you found one of the coffee cans!! I will have to bid. Imagine this can with 50 years of grunge . . . that would be ours!!

Thanks SO much.

HA!!! I checked out that auction! I don't remember the banks...but I do remember

the coffee! And the SMELL! Maybe that's why when I grew up and started drinking coffee (in my 30's!) it gave me such fond memories of childhood.

Here in SW Missouri we lived a Mayberryesque existance in the 60's. We even had a local grocer called Mayberry's Market! (family name of the owners, not named after Andy and Opieville) smileys/smile.gif

The coin saving hit me squarely between the eyes, too! My sweetie pie does save his coins! Not only that, but he saves every $1 bill he ends up with at the end of the day. I'm not sure how much he's saved that way, but it's a bunch. He has a 'hidey hole' he keeps it stashed in, I think! I told him one day he'd better show me where it is in case anything happened to him!

This was a fun thread for me to read! I could sooo relate!

Thanks for channeling me, Marilyn! That has to be how I found it! : p

Hugs!

magnolia, a question.

how do you cash in your coin? I've got thousands of them stashed everywhere and I'm to the point that I really need to do something about them. TIA

I'll respond until our southern blossom pops in

Almost all of our grocery stores have a free-standing coin machine now. It's like an ATM, but you put the money in instead of getting it out.

Just dump the coins willy-nilly and it counts and prints out a receipt that you take to the service desk for cash. Suddenly that big honkin' jar of coins is a plane ticket.

The service charge is anywhere from 10-20%. Seems like a lot, but if you have a few hundred dollars worth, the time spent NOT separating, counting and rolling is worth it for me.

I believe that chore is Reason #39617 for having kids. Which I don't, so I use the machine.

And with your eyes closed, the dinging noise almost sounds like you're in Las Vegas for the weekend. You know, like waking up with a hangover, a new husband and a tattoo...but not quite.

thanks for the info

I haven't seen any of these machines where I shop, maybe they exist other places in the city. I know that bank's usually refuse big honkin' hoardes of coin so I've been watching them grow as I wondered what to do with them.

Lisa, thanks, do you know after I looked it up

it turns out the grocery store where I normally shop came up on the list! Duh. I guess I'm thinking of food when I go in there. LOL
