nutmeg with. It is a hand held simple tool (grater) calles micro _______ ??

I feel a need to shop on line and this item would help me cover some of that need! LOL

BTW, I saw RR use it to grate nutmeg recently while flipping through the channels. Oops!

Microplane is the right tool - try....

Don't opt for the nutmeg grater with the little 'catcher' on it - unitasker as Alton would say. Go for the handheld one. Can't live without mine. They might have had some at the TJ Maxx Home Goods store in B'wood the other day if I remember correctly. If not, take a LNT or BBB 20% off coupon and head down to Cool Springs - both of them have it and it's cheaper than WS or Viking.

OH - if you like Cooks Illustrated and haven't already subscribed to it - they are offering a free microplane with a subscription.

Don't be skeered, they're easy to grip once you get the hang of it. But if it makes you more

comfortable go with the handled version, which run around $18-ish.

I'm glad you guys are talking about this... I was just thinking that I

should buy a bigger one (using a mini-version right now). Didn't I hear once that you can even buy them at the hardware store? I mean, as long as it's stainless steel, I wouldn't see why you couldn't.

Has anyone ever bought theirs at the hardware store?

Yes, in the housewares part of the hardware store! LOL (BTW many people here say it is ...

their favorite kitchen tool!)

Microplanes were ( and are) originally used as wood rasps - then someone got smart

and took it in to the kitchen......

"The big moment came in 1994, when Lorraine Lee, a homemaker in Ottawa, Canada, was making an Armenian orange cake. Out of frustration with her old grater, she picked up a new tool her husband, Leonard, had brought home from their hardware store, Lee Valley Tools. She slid the orange across its blades and was amazed. Lacy shards of zest fell from its surface like snowflakes. The Lees marveled at the tool, ate the cake, then promptly changed the product description in their catalogue. The Microplane® grater had earned permanent space in the kitchen."
