Hi all,

SIL just called and told me her MIL is bringing a cake to BIL's birthday party tonight. Problem is the cake she makes every year is awful and nobody eats it. SIL asked if I could rescue her and whip up a dessert that won't upstage the cake, but that will feed everyone. In the past I've made my brownie/choc mousse trifle, but not sure I have the time to make that. I thought I'd add your brain power to my half asleep one and ask for any ideas!

Lol - what a predicament. Some ideas inside.

"Not upstaging her" with another cake or even pie is going to be the problem, as you have said.

So maybe something like brownies? Eclairs from a store or bakery? Individual desserts seem (to me anyway) to be less "showy". A plate of cookies? Fruit with a cream cheese/whipped cream dip?

Good luck and enjoy the party.

How about bringing ice cream? You could bring brownies and a couple of toppings to go along with it.

More ideas: "Key Lime Cheesecake Squares" (I use regular limes) - delicious and easy to make....

"Deep Dish Apple Crisp" (can serve with vanilla ice cream) - Delicious, also easy to make
"Chocolate Dipped Strawberries" OR "Strawberry Cheesecake Bites"
"Raspberry Fool"
"Dark Chocolate Mousse" From Cook's Illustrated
"Chocolate Bread Pudding with Bourbon Pecan Sauce" from Bon Appetit (not T&T, but tons of great reviews)

Let me know if you want me to post any of these recipes.

How about a fruit platter with dip

Cut, slice & arrange your favorite fruit

Fruit dip recipe as follows

1 can of cranberry sauce (jelled/jellied)

1 package of creamcheese (fat free) room temperature

1 8oz whipped cream or make your own

In a large bowl add cranberry sauce, using a wooden spoon mix until softened

Add room temperature cream cheese, mix with cranberry sauce thoroughly

Add whipped cream, mix with cranberry sauce and creamcheese mixture, mix thoroughly

Refrigerate for about an hour or use right away.

Great for dipping fruit. An excellent quick recipe. Most of my dinners end with this dessert and I use it for potlucks too

Thank you, I got if from First Magazine

My sister Connie loves it and now makes it when ever she can, I have to admit it is nice to know that fruit has a dip too (I'm sure it was envious of the potato chip but NOW! fruit can be equal to the potato chip, dip-wize) hahahaha
