My 13-y-o needs to lose maybe 25 pounds or so, and her doctor recommended the low-carb approach because he believes her body isn't processing carbs well.

She's been a good spirit about this, and we're trying to find low-carb alternates to her fave foods. I know you have been living this ahwile, and thought I'd ask you for some help. Is there really any truth to this "net carbs" stuff that manufactuars are putting out? My husband bought some Mission Carb Balance tortillas for us to make wraps for her. The packaging claims that while there are 19 carbs in each tortilla there are only 3 NET carbs due to fiber. What's your experience/opinion on this net carb thing?

Thanks for any help,

Carianna

This site has a helpful explanation as well as linked articles

to a low carb net calculator.

Tough diet for a 13 year old in school, etc.
I feel for you.

The Atkins bars are a nice treat for her-- they
recommend not to have these til phase 2 of the Atkins diet. They will go a long way to help her with a craving for "sweets."

When I'm desperate, I have 1/2 a brownie bar and that helps a lot. smileys/smile.gif

Costco and BJ's have them much cheaper than the grocery store. smileys/smile.gif

Good luck!

From my experience, I've learned that the fiber

doesn't "count" because it's not metabolized by the body.

I can't imagine that there are 16 grams of fiber in a tortilla though! Maybe it's the reverse? Three grams of fiber, making the net carbs 16? That seems more reasonable. Sixteen grams sounds - er - painful.

I had forgotten the name of the low carb tortillas we use, we like them better than Mission

I was in the grocery store yesterday and scoped them out for you. La Banderita brand.

It looks like they have distribution in Washington state, maybe your grocer can get them for you. We like them better than Mission for taste and texture, and they are are 2.00 cheaper too!
11 carbs, 6 fiber, so 5 net carbs.

For some strange reason, this brand is on a rack in the dairy aisle of our supermarket, as opposed to the bread or ethnic aisles that normally have tortillas.

As others have said, yes, fiber carbohydrates are deducted

fiber is non-digestible and even though it is a carbohydrate, you should deduct it from the total to reach "net carb"

That said, if you're looking to have a signicant weight loss, you should not be eating tortillas. Read up the details on the Atkins weight loss. YOu should start out in what they term "Phase I" with minimum carbs--15/day. Wrap your meat and cheeese in lettuce wraps. You also need to pay attention to the content of innocent things like deli sliced meats. Most contain hideous amounts of added sugar (not to mention salt) that will negate the effects of a low-carb diet. Better: buy large roasts on sale and slice your own meat for lunch. First couple weeks should be eggs, meat, cheese, salads and select veggies in moderation green beans, cauliflower, asparagus, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info... Doc wants her at 20 a day for 2 weeks, then up to 40.

This morning is the first I've seen her where nothing sounds good. Overall, she's been a good joe about the whole thing so far.

I wish her luck... that comes down to about 80 calories from sugar and starch

Low. Avoid juice, eat lots of vegetables.) I've come to love steamed cauliflower.

Yes, 20 is the limit. Really, read up on the atkins plan...

and get it down to 15. That's when you really drop the weight. Down 60 pounds today!!!
