I'm glad to read your dog is doing well on your new homemade dog food recipe. You might want to go check out the link I'm sending for William Cusick's website- he is the one that gave me the most useful information when I researched. He contends each dog variety is different in their nutrition needs- makes perfect sense to me. He makes recommondations on this site- a little vague but you can at least get the basics without buying his book. It looks to me like you can avoid the Rye question altogether- personally I would use wheat germ or bulgar wheat and flax seed for your Australian Shepherd instead. I don't grind the flax- I put it in whole and our dog is able to digest it. Makes it really easy to use. I used to use Flax seed oil and that would probably be the best but it is so expensive. Making homemade food is expensive enough so I economize a bit by using the whole seed instead of the oil.

Thanks Cathy! I did check that website as well and am debating whether to buy the book smileys/smile.gif

Hubby thinks I have far too many cookbooks, but this one he might approve of smileys/smile.gif

I did find rye flakes at the health food store, so I added it to the last batch. I actually made too many changes with this last batch - added the rye flakes, ground the flax seed, and used chicken. This batch is not agreeing with her as much, so I'm not sure which of the variables made a difference.

I think I'll leave the flax whole, as you do, and go back to ground beef. I'll leave the rye and see how she does on that.

Thanks again! and woof woof, from Hoku!
