Hey Sandi,
I've been meaning to post this for awhile. I made another batch a few weeks ago, and the dough was completely different than the first few times. It was much moister, not dry and crumbly at all. Why? Because it was raining that day. Just as I had originally thought - that humidity was the root of your problem when your dough didn't come together. In spite of the rain, however, my cookies turned out well, and I certainly didn't experience the problems you did, probably because the humidity here isn't as high as where you are.
Anyway, I just thought you'd like to know that it wasn't because of the cookie gremlin, but rather the humidity gremlin.
