ISO: ISO T&T Jewish recipes...going to a Bat Mitzvah and trying to think of gift ideas

I thought as part of her gift of collecting some T&T Jewish recipes and making a small personal cookbook for her. (They don't keep Kosher, but her dad, the main cook, is a bit of a Foodie.)

However, given I'm not Jewish, I don't have any recipes to hand down to her. Any ideas?

I was thinking of making this a personal part of the gift & start a binder of T&T recipes she could

add to as she grows-up.

I certainly was baking/cooking at that age. However, I who has no idea what's she's doing here given it's my first Bat Mitzvah, am going off a website list of gift ideas, which included recipes as an item. Also, of course it's this weekend so I need to get on this.

My plan is to gift a tree in her name in the Holy Land and create the personalized cookbook binder I want to start for her.

Sigh... jewelry and recipe binder then?

Ah, jewelry...the fall back girl gift. smileys/frown.gif

I dunno here, she's a lovely sweet quiet girl - that I've met twice, just barely in passing, and a few years ago, I expect her family and people who know her better will get the standard gifts. So yeah, the tree thing was just sorta a token something...ok gift FAIL.

So the recipe binder and money? (not a fan of gifting money, but there ya go) I was hoping the recipe idea would at least be something different, I mean how many menorah, mezzuzah, and Star of David's can you get?

I do know she's started cooking some/is interested and they have a high-end kitchen I'd give my eye teeth for.

Ten Plagues Finger Puppets?
(actually I've always wanted those for me)

Maria, You are so thoughtful, I will be watching this thread, as we are going to one in Feb.You

are much more thoughtful than I am as I would have waited to the last minute and grabbed the checkbook.
It is very kind that you are giving such thought for her upcoming special day!

Gift certificate to local indie bookstore? I don't think bat/bar mitzvah gifts necessarily

need to be religious, particularly if you're not Jewish. (Same for confirmation gifts, if you're not Catholic.) I remember my brother and I, and our parents, gave our friends birthday-style gifts (book gift certificates, etc.) for theirs, and we are/were varying degrees of Catholic. I think the recipes are a fun idea, but I wouldn't stress about it--chances are, her family has recipes to pass down, especially if her dad is a gourmet.

In any case, "quiet," to me = avid reader. But I might be projecting. smileys/wink.gif

While I don't think a tree is a great idea for a 13 yr., Steve - you could still come and see the

forests grown from those trees.!!

My gifts of late to teens who might want an Ipad, pod ..whatever have been adoption of animals which

you can do from hefier, NRDC, etc. - also of other activities
related to the greater good. If you can find out an animal that
she likes it would be even better. Or help for a family trying
to start a new idea.

Or a disc of her favorites, book by a favorite, combo package of things she likes.

This part why I wanted to do the recipe binder (tangible to open) and tree (Green virtual) gifts

both parents work at Green tech companies and if I recall, there were/are plans to visit The Holy Land with her school(?) synagogue group(?) class.

But I do get the whole this is lame all I got was a tree...somewhere...gift.

My thought process, little though it is these days ☺, was I have a 98% chance of gifting her something she wouldn't use. So, I'd rather gift something that at at least does some good some place...of course if it was a tree that grows Justin Bieber clones...

Ok, I'll give up on the tree idea.

Elaine - I'm thrilled to hear of the forests!

Elaine - as one who raised money for trees and purchased myself while in Sunday school

this is so nice to hear
