I got my Vitamix and made a pineapple banana smoothie. Then made some gazpacho. Both were great. However the trick I read about storing the lid plug in the container and the tamper in the lid did not say to REMOVE the lid plug before you throw in a bunch of tomatoes and cucumbers for gazpacho!!

Anyway this morning I made a "green" smoothie with tomatoes, cucumber, red pepper, celery, radish, onion, kale, cottage cheese for protein, ground flax seed, and a little chipotle. This turned into the most disgusting Linda-Blair-Exorcist-pea-soup, green. I poured it into a dark glass and used a straw so I didn't have to look.

What do you put in your green smoothies that you don't need to pluck out your eyes to eat?

Thanks

I don't really make green smoothies but I add some spinach leaves (preferrably baby spinach)

or my favorite - watercress greens or flat leaf parsley - to regular smoothies. My favorite is with a dash of apple juice, a little yogurt, half a frozen banana cut into bits and a ton of strawberries or blueberries. Then I add some greens to the mixture, but I'm basically like you. Food needs to taste good for me to eat it. Life is just too short to drink mud water, know what I mean?

I guess I "disguise" my greens in regular smoothies....

See some tips at the link

Did you trash your lid plug? Oh no!

Also, you've got to let go of what your eyes see, or put in a non-transparent glass. Today I used a tangelo, frozen strawberries, frozen pineapple, big handful of spinach, chia seeds, and a splash of 100% pomegranate juice (normally I use water/ice only). Super tasty with all that fruit. The thing that threw me the most was soluble/insoluble fiber. Getting that ratio wrong can ruin a smoothie and create foam that tastes/smells like grass (yuck).

This is Lee Ann's recipe she makes at shows, so it's a bit prettier and tastier for newbie tastebuds:

“Emerald Ecstasy” Green Smoothie

Put Ingredients into your Vitamix in the following order:

1-2 Cups of Green Grapes
1/4 of a large Pineapple or 1/3 of a small Pineapple
One whole large Banana
Half of a small Apple or 1/4 of a large one
2 big hand fulls of Spinach (at a show I add a touch of Kale and Parsley too)
2 cups of Ice

This will make 2-3 LARGE servings or 4-5 smaller (juice glass size) servings.

Blend according to the instructions in my Fruit Juice section (until the icy slushy mixture turns into a smooth liquid). This is a “beginner” Green Smoothie. As you get used to the taste of the greens, you can increase the proportion of greens to fruit, try out some of the “stronger tasting greens” (remember, Spinach is one of the “magic veggies”), and use fruits that are not as sweet – like berries for instance.

The plug has some scratches but is ok. I may spend the $14 to replace it. I have some studying to do

From what I read at the links you supplied, I think I added to much stuff. I did get my Vitamix through Lea Ann.

Yeah, there's a lot in that... (I've listed some of Dr Fuhrman's charts on nutrients here)

I'd for sure leave out the cottage cheese - remember your greens are full of protein. Those of us who grew-up with the standard American diet have it rammed into our head that you must have meat/dairy for protein. I did as well, forgetting my 3rd grade knowledge of plant proteins.

You'll get the hang of it, but I made some real duds at first. FYI, a little lemon (small slice if using peel) goes a long way to brighten the taste of lots of things.

Here is a protein comparison greens vs. meat

Here is a nutrient density chart

You might be wondering why I'm listing everything via Dr. Fuhrman, but his chart is also used at Whole Foods as the standard. The video below is of him giving a quick explanation of the chart.

This looks great, Maria. Thanks for posting. As for Dr. Fuhrman...

I don't find him to be a preachy type, and he always uses sources for his findings and recommendations so it's easy to go back to the original source and I really like that about him.

Here's a quick pix of this am green smoothie...

Eva, I really like Furhman because he includes his sources/science too.

Had to go move the sprinkler so took a couple of quick snaps so you'd see the color, but I've made many that aren't this green and less pretty. This has chia seeds, a tangelo, big handful of organic spinach, maybe 5-6 frozen organic strawberries, some frozen pineapple, and a splash of pomegranate juice.

greens in smoothies

Michael, I had my usual coffee/avocado/coconut milk for my breakfast, with papaya and 1 kale leaf (minus the stem) thrown in. I didn't even know it was there.

I have lots of smoothie ebooks, maybe even some information is in them how to balance flavors, etc. Let me know if you'd like me to send some to you via email.

Vitamix demonstrator, LeaAnn, has a yahoo group called VitamixEnthusiasts...you could get some ideas and recipes there.
