manual one which i remember rolling around the floor for what seemed like hours on end. i'm curious to know if there's a perfect machine out there - have any of you found one that you would reccomend?

I like my Cuisinart ICE-20 but I have never compared it to another home ice cream maker

I find home-made ice cream to be delicious, although the ice crystals are larger than commercial ice cream, and when you put it in the freezer it freezes solid, so you really have to eat it right away. My understanding is that this is normal for homemade ice cream, but I've seen some high-end ($250+) ice cream makers that claim to make smoother ice cream with smaller ice crystals.

I have a Krupps

I like it except that you have to have room to put the work bowl in the freezer.
Just don't put M&Ms in too early or you will have grey ice cream.........

I love my Krupps, it's easy to use, easy to clean and easy on the purse smileys/smile.gif

I have the old Rival electric that works with ice and salt out on the porch. Good if you don't have

freezer space for the newer machines that require freezing first. It worked great at the cabin this summer.

I still use a cheap frozen-canister manual...

made by Donvier, 1/2-quart size. Last time I looked I could only find a 1-quart model. You put the canister in the freezer a day or so before you need it (we keep ours in the freezer all the time, ready to go) then you just pour your ice cream base into it, slip in the paddle, and give it a turn every couple of minutes for about 20 minutes. No ice, easy cleanup, no strain on the arms. You can carry it around with you, take it outside, use it during a blackout. Makes good, creamy ice cream which you can freeze in another container if you prefer a more solid ice cream.

many thanks for the replies! had wondered about the kitchenaid attachment, seems to have reviewed

well in mimi's link (very informative). now my beloved blue stand mixer will do even more!
