So that's what my 85 year old aunt wants for her birthday; she freezes it until she's ready to make ... you guessed it, Christmas fruitcake. But since that's all she asked for, I feel compelled to try and find it. Googling didn't help me; I found lots of diced and cubed, but no whole (which in the past I did find). Any help would be much appreciated!

I saw them in storefronts in Sicily...

but have not seen them in this country. Good luck in your search. Perhaps a city with a large southern Italian population? I know that Boston's North End is mainly Calabrese and Siciliano. Maybe you are close to such a place?

Amusingly, that was the last time I tried to find citron.

Dairy Fresh Candies has sadly closed. So I'm still searching.

Luisa, after you mentioned the miner's lettuce, I looked up pictures of it and with in days, I saw

what I believe to be the lettuce in a drainage ditch where I sometimes walk. It's way down in the bottom of the ditch and wouldn't be safe to eat even if I could reach it, but it sure looks like the pictures I saw on line. I googled and it does seem to grow in Florida, so it's possible.

We only pick in "clean" areas above the "dog pee zone." Now that>>

you know what it looks like and that it does grow around where you are maybe you can keep your eyes open for some in a more respectable zone. Good luck and let me know if you are successful. We just now got back from our walk where we picked some more for salads. It warms up pretty quickly around here so we may only get one more picking before the weather turns... if the rains ever stop.

You should be so lucky! But I did see it years ago in New Jersey

in an Italian deli/butcher, so you might find it somewhere there still. I haven't seen it since then. My BIL brought me some from Madeira, and it lives in my freezer and is sparingly sliced for the Christmas cakes. It's so delicious, and so different from the tiny cubes sold in December. I have enough for one more year, then we'll have to find enough money to go back to Madeira ourselves.
