Paula Deen's Not Yo Mama's Banana Pudding

We love this recipe. I know it's not "traditional" and not really "heart-healthy", but when we make it, it goes ... FAST!

2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies
6 to 8 bananas, sliced
2 cups milk
1 (5-ounce) box instant French vanilla pudding
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream

Line the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top.
In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Around here it would be boiled custard, Niller wafers, nanners

and either whipped cream or a meringue from the egg whites from making the boiled custard.
Layer of crumbled wafers, layer of nanners, layer of boiled custard, Repeat. Top with meringue or whipped cream.
Instead of the Niller wafers you could use pound cake.

Ooohhh yes! "Not Yo' Mama's" is soooo good!! And even great the next day...

when the cookies have softened. I break up the cookies a bit for the bottom layer (only) to make scooping easier. People just go nuts for this recipe. You can make it the morning of.

Real banana pudding has a delicate flavor. No delicacy here, methinks.

LOTS of sugar and artificial "prepared" tastes. Just my opinion. It is really basically a "banana trifle".

I once tried the recipe on the back of the Nilla Vanilla Wafers box, and it was wonderful.

Much like the recipe Gretchen describes. I got very into French desserts shortly thereafter, so I haven't made it again, but it was simple, direct, and homemade.

You're gonna just have to try it....it's one of those things you can't stop eating....

DH went to the refrige about 4 times with spoon in hand one night.

Nope, no sweetened condensed milk (except maybe tres leches) and NO CoolWhip. But it;'s ok--just not

really true banana pudding--just like the title says. And I am so not a Paula Deen fan. She really gives southern cooking and southern folk a bad reputation in my opinon.

Durward, do you

have a banana pudding recipe you would like to share? I love Paula Deen's recipe, but I would like to try a different recipe.

Thanks

Pretty much what I said above.

Make boiled custard (creme anglaise) using egg yolks and reserving the whites.
put a layer of crushed Nilla wafers or cubed pound cake in a dish. Cover with sliced bananas and then the custard. Repeat the layers.
Make a meringue. Spread on top and bake to brown. Or cover with whipped cream.
