The top-rated one of a reasonable price by Consumer Reports and Cooks Illustrated, the Braun PowerMax, has pretty negative reviews from users at amazon, epinion, etc. I'm really surprised at the mix of reviews about one model of a blender. All the way from "piece of crap" to the best thing since sliced bread.

The Juicelady 600 has rave reviews, but it has been discontinued.

I'd like to make smoothies, crushed ice, maybe pop some chickpeas in and I don't want to pay big bucks.

What blender do YOU use, that you've had for awhile, that you'd recommend?

Thanks!

Debbie

If you are going to do smoothies and a lot of ice I think big bucks may be required

or you will be replacing it very quickly. VitaMix seems to get the most applause.

i got my smoothie pro 700 at bj's for $30.

it's done great for i guess 5 years.

and it makes fantastic (well sorta fantastic) frozen daiquiris.

Waring. I love my Waring Blender.....and it's vital for tasks that processors cannot handle...

Like puree and emulsify. It was not expensive at all (have had it for years). It's not the "pro" all stainless model that is very pricy, but rather the kind found in your basic discount and department stores. It has about 14 different speeds.

Not a Kitchen Aid - I hate mine. We used to make the best slushy margaritas in

a regular old Black and Decker. I also agree with kpinky about the Waring - they are good and not expensive.

I've had a Krups Power Burst for about 6-8 years. It was a bit spendy, but at the...

time I had a part-time job at a shop with a very generous employee discount.
I mostly make smoothies with yogurt, fresh and frozen fruit. It also purees very well.
Best thing (other blenders probably have it too?) is openings around the base, so that when you wash it and turn it upside down it drains all the way.

I despise my KitchenAid too...

and wonder why I keep it, except it does make a fine shake. But other than that, it doesn't DO anything. For the longest time I thought mine had dud blades, maybe it was a floor model with blunt blades so little children wouldn't hurt their fingers. (After my poor luck with KA mixers, both the standard and the heavy-duty models, I've really gone off that brand.)

The VitaMix is tops!

I throw frozen strawberries, frozen mango chunks and fresh peeled oranges together, with some water and maybe a little ice and sugar and make some fantastic smoothies. It will take care of everything, so you aren't just drinking juice, you are drinking the whole fruit, fiber, seeds and all; very good for you.

and I don't like carrots, but throw a peeled carrot in with some peeled oranges--pretty good!

I also buy organic diced tomatos at Trader Joe's and make sauce by pouring a couple of cans in the Vitamixer, cover and ZING! I have puree that I then cook down for my spaghetti sauce.

OH NO...I GOOFED...I have an OSTERIZER (not a Waring!). I love my Oster blender!

Sorry for the goof-up. Waring is sort of like the name Kleenex to me. But I've had an Osterizer for years and it's just great.

Shaun, I agree about the dull blades, and the base is too wide to efficiently crush anything. And..

the bottom does not always attach securely, so it leaks and makes a big mess. smileys/frown.gif

I love my KA stand mixer, though.
