It is going to be close to 70 on Friday and I want to grill....

Despite the fact that my guys are only 5 and 6, the advent of baseball and soccer season has us as crazed as parents of high school athletes. Friday night is the ONLY night this week that we do not have a sports-related or school-related activity and I want to celebrate with a nice spring dinner. As it will be close to 70 and the grill has been kept dormant all winter long (I KNOW you CAN grill in the winter, however, this Californian transplanted to Minnesota chooses NOT to venture out into the tundra), I would love to break out the grill and make something fun. I also would like the food to be seasonally appropriate. Any ideas? I really want it to be a nice meal as it will be our only family one this whole week.

Thanks

Kathleen

How about pizzas? I saw on tv once how the chef

made little personal ones, very rustic-looking handcut ones, topped with whatever toppings the people liked, cooked over high heat.

You could always do potatoes and corn soaked in water and wrapped in foil, but it sounds like you want something out of the ordinary here.

Maybe shish kabobs or chicken wings?

If your grill is large enough to cook at different temperatures, you might grill some peaches or nectarines topped with a little cinnamon to put over some ice cream for dessert?

Souvlaki skewers in T&T would be perfect, kids will eat it!

and some grilled veggies and potato wedges. all easy to prep ahead.
have fun!

So funny you suggested this....

...on the way to Little League practice I asked my guys what their favorite meal we made on the grill last summer was and they all, in unison, shouted "pizza!" So, pizza it is. I had actually forgotten we had done grilled pizzas last year. I was going to spring them up with asparagus, goat cheese, artichoke hearts, etc but pizza it shall be. Trying to find a killer dessert to go with it. Until all these sports are over, all of us eating a meal together is going to be rather rare (lots of sandwiches in the car in our future) so I do want it to be special.

Thanks!

How about Traca's Ricotta Pound Cake with ~frosting~? What kids wouldn't like that!

or angel food cake topped with fruit they pick out, or ice cream sundaes, or homemade ice cream, or..... oh, I could go on!

Just thought of one more fun one - Dirt Cake, where you mix chocolate cake with putting and top it with "dirt" (crushed Oreos) and put gummy worms and spiders on top? Add a seed packet on a popsicle stick for you all to plant, and you have flowers or vegetables in the summer, too.
