I have been "selling: peaches and tomatoes at our retirement community
for the past 6 weeks. The ones I buy are from just a little west of Charlotte in NC Just south of Charlotte is Gaffney, the center of peach growing. The peaches have been superb each week with each new variety as it comes in. On our way to the beach in late May it was clings which have great flavor but are a pain to slice.
All season the peaches have been really large but this week they were immense, gorgeous and delicious--Red Prince, one of my favorites.
The folks I "sell" to (I buy, sell at my cost reimbursed by our community with any small profit going to our foundation--purely a service to people who may not drive or certainly don't go to a farmer's market).
The major supermarket across the street is now selling California peaches--it is impossible for a peach to ripen after being shipped across country--they just turn mealy. They had also sold "local" but because they have to refrigerate them, it just stops the ripening process even for local fruit.
I can't speak to your not being able to get good peaches but I would think farmer's markets would have them.
