We used to eat this when I was a kid and I LOVED IT. I haven't had it in years. Talking with my sister, yesterday, she mentioned it when I was asking her for a clarification on another recipe. I told her I wanted to get it from her so she wrote it up for me.
She has here "double the receipe" but we both have large families so you decide.
1 LB ground beef
1 package spaghetti sauce mix
1 8oz can tomato sauce
2 C sifted flour
1 TBLSP baking powder
1 TSP salt
1/4 C shortening
1/4 C chopped onion
1/2 to 3/4 C milk
1 C shredded cheese
Cook the ground beef in a skillet until brown, stirring frequently, then stir in spaghetti sauce mix and tomato sauce. Simmer for about 10 minutes or until thickened. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together into a bowl and cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in onion and blend in enough milk to make a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 30 seconds. Roll out to a 12 x 16 inch rectangle. Spread 1 cup of the beef mixture evenly over dough and roll as for jelly roll, starting at the narrow edge. Seal the long edge securely and cut into 1 inch thick slices. Place on lightly greased baking sheet (Or a non-greased stone). Bake at 425 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Blend the water into the remaining beef mixture and heat through. Spoon beef sauce over the roll ups and sprinkle cheese over sauce.
Six servings.
She added: "Tom, another good thing to do is make taco meat- with a mix packet and roll that up in the dough. Yummy!!"
