The snow is falling hard and fast in frozen Cincinnati. My work was closed at lunch and I picked up a passle of cookbooks I had ordered at the library on the way home, and for this cold frigid day, here is Mr. Thomas Jefferson's recipe from Paris for Coffee Custards...
Monticello Coffee Custards
Put in a pan 1 cup of very strong coffee and 1 cup milk. Bring to a boil. Beat 4 eggs and add 4 tablespoonfuls of sugar and a pinch of salt.
Add the hot milk, stir will, and pass through a strainer.
Fill custard cups with the mixture, set in a pan of water and bake until set.
