It's our final Halloween in this neighborhood... I'd like to do something special!

We're building a new house (and if we survive THAT process with all of us alive/still married it will be a miracle...) and this will be our last hurrah in this Halloween-crazed neighborhood. We usually get around 100+ trick-or-treaters coming by.

This year I'd like to invite several friends and their little goblins over for a pre-trick-or-treat dinner. I was thinking a bruschetta bar and a nice big salad would fit the bill perfectly. I'd like to serve a variety of toppings - some kid-friendly, but not all. Maybe some kind of steak topping, a chicken topping, and a caprese-style topping? I'm still hemming and hawing over the whole thing.

What are your favorite bruschetta toppers? I don't mind having warm toppings, but since this will be a build-your-own affair, I don't want any that have to be heated in the oven AFTER they go on the bread.

I like diced mushrooms (sauteed/marinated with some garlic), diced tomatoes, and Italian parsley...

with some Parmesan thrown in...and olive oil...

not bruschetta, but Martha Stewart has the best "finger" cookies on her website. easy too

It's basically shortbread dough formed into fingers, but the best part is coloring a blanched almond with red food color and pressing it into the top for a red fingernail.

 
and Nigella Lawson had a show with creepy foods for kids that had a lovely green slime soup

made with frozen peas and broth and melted mozzarella for the "slime", quite healthy actually. Also had some small twice baked potatoes that had cheese and ketchup added for that special "look".

 
I 2nd these MS cookies; I make them every year...

the best part is how you display them. I put them in pots filled with rice and covered with a layer of brownie crumbs or some such to look like dirt -- then have them clawing their way up out of the dirt! smileys/smile.gif
