I've a question for y'all about your baking powder and baking soda. I recently heard Carla Hall say

it should be replaced every 4 months. I had assumed it was good for at least 6-8 months or even a year. I'm sure my mother used a can of baking powder within 4 months with no problem but I sure don't. How often do you replace your baking soda and baking powder if you've not used it all?

 
I think we had this question come up a few years ago. The answers surprised me. I just don't

get bothered about replacing mine, either of them. I honestly have never had a problem. Now that I am cooking for one, I buy small BS and use it within 2 years and buy BP in bulk about 1/2 c. at a time and just refill the jar. But that's at least an 8-month supply

 
I make sure I test them every so often. Once I bought my usual brand of baking powder with

the usual long exp. date, and it was dead on arrival. Since then, I always test them before using for the first time, and at intervals afterward.

 
If you live in a humid area, you will need to replace BP more often, or use it more quickly. (nt)

 
I tend to bake a lot but I still buy these things in the smallest size package I

find at whatever grocery I am in. This forces me to not have it around for too long.

 
Thanks for bringing this up. I was just about to make a Clementine Cake for dessert tomorrow nighta

and checked my can, expiration date OCT 2014. It was dead, no bubbles. Off to the store and now the cake is in the oven.

 
I'm glad I could help, lol. Still confused by different results. I'm wondering if some of the

differences have to do with the area we live in and how fresh the baking powder is in stores. Hate to think of the differences with self-rising flour!
