Golden Syrup

(Substitute for Lyle's Golden Syrup)

Put 1/4 cup sugar in a small heavy saucepan

and shake pan so the sugar is in an even layer.

Sprinkle it with 1/2 tsp vinegar and 1 tsp water.

Cook over low heat, without stirring, for 5 minutes.

Increase heat to medium and cook until syrup has taken on a

light caramel colour, 5 to 6 minutes.

Immediately remove from heat and pour in 1/3 cup light corn syrup.

Do not stir, but let it bubble for 2 to 3 minutes.

When the bubbling stops, stir well.

It can be stored at room temperature for several months.

OH Dear Mar, I have no idea...if only I could send you some.....

if I get a chance I will make this syrup recipe this week end and see if it will do. We get a "stroop" here that is a bit like your corn syrup. It is a Dutch product and although it turns out OK crunchies it is not quite the same...however they are tasty...sooo you could try and make them with any syrup, I guess...wonder what maple syrup would be like...... pm me with your address and if I find some I will ask a friend who is coming to stay...she is from FL to take some back with her for you.

Marilyn, I can get it here in Longwood. Where are you in FL?

Nothing really tastes the same as golden syrup.

Thanks all! I'll check a few more local sites and then test this version.

Since I don't know what the original tastes like, this substitution might work for me.

Missy, I've never seen that label here. Will check a bit more carefully at the store.

Lana, I've PM'd you.

rvb, I'll keep Amazon in mind.

Just posted one above which i use but i think....

using different oats is the prob. good old Jungle oats were the best....however, I will make some this week-end and see how they come out with quaker oats.

Did you ever drive through Maitland near the Foreshore in Cape Town and smell the Jungle Oats factory????? A smell from my childhood. There was also a tannery near there so the mixed smells were fascinating to say the least.
