Joe - or anyone - what is making multiple holes in my lettuce and how do I kill it?!

Could be snails or caterpillars. For snails you can use a product called Slug-go

which is not toxic to pets or humans.

For caterpillars use Safer Caterpillar Killer, or another product containing the organic ingredient B.t.

Not to gross you our too much, but snails leave curly poop behind, while caterpillars' is more granular.

OR, if the lettuce is full grown, since it's hot it is likely to bolt soon anyway. Pull it all, discard damaged leaves, wash, dry and store wrapped in paper towels in an airtight container. Freshly picked lettuce will last up to 2 weeks this way.

or adopt a racoon. Or broken egg shells in a pan of beer. (they get stuck in it, or soused, not sure

I still can't believe you have lettuce growing after this heat wave! What was left of mine fried in

July. Congratulations.

I start planting it in Oct. and continue through May--I don't even attempt it in summer.

You know, France imports a great deal of their escargot from California. They ate all theirs.

If only we could send them every last one and be done with them.

Think I'll go with picking it all...maybe I'll sneak out with a flashlight later and see smileys/smile.gif
