Hi!

Three weeks ago, for some unknown reason, without warning, my hard drive 'crashed'... as my computer guy said as he looked at the dreaded 'blue screen'... "This is very, very bad."

Luckily, I had my recipe files backed up on disc, but I never thought of backing up my e-mail address book, or my list of 'favorites' and all the other 'stuff' that I took for granted by clicking here and there on the screen. I lost all my e-mail messages that I had saved over the years containing directions to places, phone numbers, contacts, and the sad, sweet and humorous messages smileys/frown.gif

It was also a big adjustment to be without the home internet for over 3 weeks--funny, how much we rely upon this access without realizing it. Out of habit, I would still wander over to the computer to click on my e-mail, and then remember...whoops, no access. I had to run the kids down to the office at night to use the computer for research and writing their papers. Well... I'm back on track again, and I have to catch up on all the postings here that I've missed and figure out what to make for dinner tonite!

And particularly back up your digital photo files.

There is some discussion now that CDs and DVDs may not last. I am about to get an external hard drive for my photos.

Let me know details of one you get, I feel I should get the same too but dont know what....

to look for here.

yes!!! >>>>

I lost my digital photo files too, but since I had just gotten the digital camera in December, I still had the photos on the camera and now have re-loaded them onto the computer. I had not backed them up on disc, just not realizing the risk of loss. I am so glad that I didn't delete them from the camera!
I had over 150 pictures from our trip to Germany at Christmas!! I would still be crying if I lost these!
Actually, we now have an external hard drive too which my son is loading up with my photo file, recipe file and all the other important stuff! It is alot safer than cd's or dvd's as you had mentioned.

Joanie, I am not sure...

about all this computer stuff, but this external hard drive is about the size of a VHS tape, weighs a few pounds and is by Maxtor. My son bought it at Best Buy for about $150. Hopefully someone here knows more about the products available than me and can give you some better advice!

I "hear" you!

WOW - I too got the "Blue Screen of Death" about two weeks ago!

Fortunately we are blessed with a wonderful neighbor who does computer work as his full-time job. So we were only "down" about 4 days -- BUT, It's tax season (and my dh has a full-time job and a side tax business) and we "lost" lots of data. We DO have an external hard drive we're SUPPOSED to use as back-up. But "I" (why do I always get blamed) hadn't backed up for a couple of weeks !!! You can bet I back up EVERY day now!

external hard drive

They're great -- IF you do it!

It's really easy. They are "usb" connected. You plug it in the wall for power and use the "usb" connector to connect to one of your "usb" ports in the back (some also have them in the front too) of your computer.

Go into "my computer" and you'll see a new drive -- (usually named e: but it depends on your computer). Now you have a whole new drive to save things to.
