Just curious...does anyone put their wooden spoons in the dishwasher?...

kpinky, please don't put anything wooden in the dishwasher....

unless it is a piece that you don't care much about. Wood is like a sponge and absorbs the water. You should never let your wood kitchen ware sit in a sink full of water either, just quickly wash wood items (wooden utensils, cutting boards, serving bowls, wood handled knives, etc) with a little warm soapy water.

I work in a small store that sells all American made crafts. We sell MANY wood utensils and cutting boards. Every piece that leaves our stores is acompanied with a carecard that says to never put these items in the dishwasher. I have seen the results when they are returned to us. The wood splits, it is all swollen and out of shape from absorbing water, the beautiful grain has disappeared and the colors (from different types of woods) are all dissolved.

Your wood pieces will last a lifetime with a little care. Once or twice a year, lightly sand them down to reveal the natural grain and bring out the colors again. Then lightly oil with mineral oil, beeswax or other food safe oil product. Your pieces will look brand new!

I know it's probably not recommended, but i always wash mine in the dw, and I've been doing it for

years and years with no problems. Now, my wooden spoons aren't finely crafted pieces, I probably bought them at linens n things or kmart or someplace like that, but they are sturdy and do the job.

Thanks, Barbara, for the thoughtful advice. I'd never put my better pieces in the dw, ...

but these cheap wooden spoons are another thing. I don't have really good ones so I was hoping I could just dishwash them and they'd be OK for a few years. Looks like some folks do so I'll probably try it. Thanks again.

you can wash them in the dw if you them down with oil shortly afterward.

mineral oil is best cuz inwon't ever go rancid.

I wash them in the DW too but I have a "counter top" model and it doesn't have a drying function...

so I just open the door and everything air dries in 30 minutes or so.

When the wooden spoons get a little dry looking I oil them with lemon woodblock oil (the lemon disinfects them and disappates by the time I use them again).

This reminds me, I should oil everything tonight, it's been quite a while!

Thanks, everyone! I have mineral oil anyway for my salad bowl...

but never thought to use it on my spoons. Well duh. So into the dishwasher they will be going. Yay.

I always put mine in the dishwasher and have never had a

problem. I usually buy them in the Dollar Store so who cares of something happend to them.
