Just for fun, I'm heading up a team of six parent volunteers who will be cooking at the Grand Canyon

We've been planning this for months, and it looks like a fun week.

I'll be leaving the 14th and returning (exhausted) on the 19th.

Woo Hoo!!!

Michael

Except that it will still be cold, it sounds like a good time. Where does everyone sleep, and cook?

Please share your recipes, menus and techniques...

at the rate that the PTO is pulling me in, I may need these in the near future! Good luck and have fun!

I'm so jealous! Have a great time...send back loads of pix!

It sure beats making spaghetti and salad for 150! Trade you!

I'm tent camping, along with a couple of the braver parents, but many parents...

...have hotel rooms nearby.

We have no electricity, so all cooking is going to be done on very large propane camp stoves.

Much of the actual cooking is being done here in town so we only have to bring it up to temp and serve.

I'm using Food Saver bags to suction pack and freeze a lot of stuff (shredded chicken, bean soup, mexican rice) and then using large "turkey blasters" to boil water. The food can then be re-heated without opening the bags, directly in the water.

We've tested this out and it looks like a winner.

More later,

Michael

Yeah, I've camped quite a bit in my life, and it doesn't bother me. The Grand Canyon..

...is something I would love for everyone to see at least once in their lives. Impossible to describe, and pictures never do it justice.

Michael

You lucky dog.

I think this sounds Wonderful. Brave man. I teach high school and think you are a saint. The Grand Canyon should be wonderful after the forced flood. All of the sand banks for camping and boating are reinstated. I hope they do that every year. There was a news report the other night about reestablishment of the ecosystem by the flooding. One of the most mezmerizing places in the world. (Dry Ice lasts for about 4 to 5 days in a ice chest sealed with tape.)

I hope you have an air bed mattress : ) no way jose' could I sleep on the ground anymore!!

It is indeed a magical place. Have fun.

Our kids are holding a debate near the Glen Canyon Dam. Many think the dam should be...

...taken down to allow the Colorado River to flow naturally through the Grand Canyon, as nature intended.

I saw old photos of Glen Canyon, before it was flooded, and it is as beautiful as the Grand Canyon itself. It's a shame that we decided to submerge it.

We'll see...

Michael

I'm not an air mattress kind of guy. I use two, two-inch layers of foam rubber...

...and it feels just like a firm mattress.

I'll be sleepin' like a baby...

Michael

The first thing out of my mouth when I heard they wanted me to lead the volunteers was...

..."What? You mean I get to camp...and cook? Where do I sign?"

Michael

What great memories you're going to have! There's a Sierra Club book by Eliot Porter..

called "The Place No One Knew" with breathtaking views of Glen Canyon before the dam.
